bill clinton won with 1,524 counties. do you know how many counties obama won last year? 690. that's it. 690. even though he won a convincing popular vote majority. gerrymandering wasn't a complete nonfactor in 2012. the gop probably did grab a few extra seats because of it. but the real problem for democrats is that their base of support is less spread out geographically than it's ever been, which means they can win presidential races and even control the senate, but when it comes to the house, their best, their only chance for the foreseeable future is a massive anti-gop tide, like something we saw in 2006 or 2008. short of that, the era of republican speakers could last for a long time. okay, that does it for "the

this new bureau was part of the process which secretary clinton initiated. this is one of the most direct outgrowths. there was a feeling that the u.s. needed to be more effective, needs to be a more coherent. that is how it remains. what i thought i would do in the 10 minutes or so that i was invited to set the table is to describe some of the internal challenges that are at the top of my mind for this first year. to give you a quick taste of that, not dwell on the changes we have made inside of the bureau because really is not just the start up, there is a merger as well in the existing office. it was a complicated transaction that we got this year. i am happy to come back to it. i am not going to give you examples. we will talk about the country cases. i am sure that some of you will come back with some of those as the session goes on. in terms of the internal needs, obviously there is a very big map of opportunity that is out there. just yesterday at the senior staff meeting, because of the holiday it was yesterday, secretary carried finish to the meetin

i have to admire hillary clinton. she said about a year ago that she felt it would be possible to get toward a program where there was some enrichment, but it had to be down, at least in that direction, and she was putting it on the table. what you are talking about, but we have not been concrete enough, to some extent, a proposal that was either inherently or explicitly in that direction, and i laid out for you what my end-state goal would be, we would hope we get over that hurdle. because i think it is important, would like to see is in negotiations for two reasons. one, because i want them to succeed, but if there are to fail, i want to know sooner than later. >> can i probe for an amendment on the international dimensions here and as it relates to the question of enrichment and sanctions? you both seem to act and to size the idea that getting the iranians where we would be comfortable with them being on enrichment means putting forward the real prospect of sanctions release and more carrots. these sanctions were s

i have been a republican since i can remember, and one thing that stuck out to me about bill clinton was his willingness to compromise. i did not much like the guy, but he was a good compromise and. he knew -- compromiser. he knew how to reach across the aisle and the country benefited for it. now you have a guy that has no willingness to compromise. he is so far to the left and nobody will get past him. host: let's get a response from megan hughes. guest: kelly, your appreciation for what president clinton did, moving to the middle and brokering deals, it is certainly a valid point. in terms of whether or not president obama is a compromiser, one good group to ask would be some of the democrats because i think they would contend that when it comes to entitlement reforms and things he has put on the table that those would qualify as compromises, being open to potential means testing or peeling back medicare benefits for higher income earners. the idea of change to cpi, looking at that with social security reform -- there are definitely some things that have riled up fellow democrats.
